Indestructible Dog Toys: Our 7 Favorite Tough Dog Toys

Last updated on April 22, 2022 By Puppy Leaks 90 Comments

Indestructible Dog Toys

While browsing through our destroyed dog toy graveyard the other day I realized something; we’ve gone through at least 100 toys over the past few years.

I was looking at all the scraps — the left arm of blue monkey, the half eaten face of moo moo, and what’s left of daisy duck’s torso. These guys never even stood a chance.

But we do have a few toys that have lasted, a few that my dog can’t actually destroy. Here’s my 7 picks for the best indestructible dog toys.

Indestructible Dog Toys: Not Many Pass the Test

“Help! My dog destroys new toys within minutes.” Sound familiar?

You’re not alone. Plenty of us buy “indestructible” dog toys, only to find them shredded up a few minutes later. We’ve gone through more than 100 toys over the past few years, but I’m finally able to say we’ve found a few truly tough dog toys that my dog can’t destroy.

I have my doubts when it comes to dog toys being indestructible, no matter what the package claims. My dog has destroyed many toys that were labeled indestructible, some within minutes.

I don’t care what sort of inverted sewing method was used to put it together – if it’s stuffed my dog will find a way to destroy it. We did have one plush that lasted about a week — it was a blue Kong dog. But just as all the others before it met it’s fate and now sits in the dog toy graveyard.

Rubber toys usually last a bit longer than stuffed, but I’ve been disappointed many times. I’ve bought many pull toys, balls, and oddly shaped rubber toys that  claimed to be indestructible. Indestructible enough for what? They don’t fare well against the jaws of a Shepherd mix, that’s for sure.

We all want to find toys our dogs can’t destroy, toys that will keep them busy for hours, and toys that won’t be destroyed within seconds. If you’re looking for the toughest dog toys check out our top 7 picks below.

Kong & West Paw Zogoflex Toys Are Tough

What have I learned after going through 100 toys? There aren’t many super tough dog toys out there, and even less truly indestructible ones. But there are a few brands that fare better than the rest — Kong & West Paw.

Out of all the toys we’ve tried the only ones that have remained in one piece after a few years are the Kongs, balls & West Paw Zogoflex toys.

They’re not fancy, they don’t squeak, and they don’t glow, spin, or shake – but they last. They’ve endured Laika’s jaws for years where many others have failed. When my dog is left alone with them I know they’ll remain intact, no matter how hard she tries to destroy them.

What These Tough Dog Toys Have in Common

  1. They’re made to last & very durable
  2. These toys are great for tough chewers
  3. They don’t squeak
  4. None of these toys have stuffing
  5. These toys are great for indoor games
  6. They’re the only toys I’ve found that my dog can’t destroy
  7. They’re great toys for keeping your dog busy

My 7 Favorite Indestructible Dog Toys

So after going through hundreds of toys trying to pick our favorites there’s only 7 that made the list; these are the best indestructible dog toys you can buy. Laika has had these for years and they’re still in amazing shape. If your dog is a tough chewer I can’t recommend these enough.

1. Classic Kong – The Most Versatile Dog Toy

tough dog toyOne of the basics in any dog owners home – everyone loves a nice classic Kong. I’ve found so many great ways to full a Kong, here’s 39 foods & treats that are perfect for stuffing. It gives your dog something to work for, a simple job, a goal to accomplish. It’s the easiest way I’ve found to keep a dog occupied with very little effort on my end.

Every time I leave for work Laika gets her Kong filled with some frozen peanut butter or broth; it works so well that she doesn’t even pay attention to my departure. Every morning I’m left with the image of my dog with her nose shoved in that Kong as I leave. If you’ve ever had a dog with separation anxiety you know how amazing that is.

A classic Kong is great because of it’s durability and multiple uses. Out of all the dog toys we own the Kong has found the most use over the years. And they’re tough — after many years there’s a few slight signs of wear but nothing that’s punctured the material. They’re nontoxic and dishwasher safe. Available here on Amazon.

Kongs Come in a Variety of Sizes

indestructible dog toyWe’ve had a couple of these since my dog was a puppy for teething purposes and we still play with them 3 years later. If you have a really big dog these might be too small, but they still work well for my Shepherd mix that’s 75 lbs.

Neither have any signs of damage, and the really small one is excellent for fetch in the house because it’s so light. Sure it doesn’t always land where you expect but it’s so light it’s not going to knock anything over. Great for small dogs and puppies.

The smallest Kong shaped toy we have (the small brown one in the image below) is the Griggles Satellite Dog Toy. The Griggles toy is smaller than my palm but somehow remains in one piece. Puppy Kongs are available at most pet stores and Amazon.

2. Chuck It! Max Glow Ball

Our 7 Favorite Indestructible Dog Toys

This glow ball is seriously awesome — I didn’t think a lightweight ball of any kind stood a chance against Laika. But 3 years later it’s still one piece, without any signs of wear or tear. I didn’t think this ball would last a week because it’s so light, but boy was I wrong. I have no idea what sort of magic this thing is made of but it’s truly awesome.

The glow ball is light enough to play with indoors without having to worry about destroying the house. And as an added bonus it glows in the dark. And not just a little either, this thing is bright.

The only downside is that every time your dog chomps down on it it’ll make a weird squishy type noise. It doesn’t bother me in the least, but then again Laika has made that noise over a million times now I’m probably immune. The Chuck It! Max Glow Ball is available here on amazon.

3. West Paw Ball – My Dog’s Favorite Fetch Toy

west paw ball indestructibleThis ball has seen it all and it doesn’t have a single mark on it. This is our go ball for games of fetch both indoors & out. When I’m not playing fetch with Laika she’ll go and play with this ball in the kitchen. She absolutely loves bouncing it around on her own. 9 times out of 10 if my dog brings me something it’s this ball.

The large size (3 inches) is perfect for my 75 pound dog, though I did read a few reviews that said this ball is too small for their extra large dogs.  If you suspect this might be too small for your dog check into the heavier Kong Ball. The West Paw Ball is available here from Amazon.

If you want something other than another ball check out the rest of the West Paw Zogoflex toy line. If your worried your dog is too much of a chewer they offer a free one-time replacement. Laika has 3 other toys from this line – the Hurley Bone and the Tux Treat Toy that are in great shape after a lot of use. Their Bumi Tug toy is one of our favorite tug toys, but it’s not indestructible like the others.

4. Jolly Ball – Fun Dog Toy That’s Hard to Puncture

indestructible dog toyThere’s something so magnetic about a Jolly Ball to dogs, and I’ll admit I don’t really understand why. It’s too big to pick up, and yet my dog never tires of chasing it. We play many soccer games in the great room with our Jolly ball, and Laika loves every minute of it.

I was worried that this toy wouldn’t last after she somehow managed to get her teeth into it a few times – but it’s lasted none the less.

It has a little bit of wear and tear, but she hasn’t managed to break into it – even after a few years. Make sure to buy the classic version without the handle; dogs can grab onto that handle and tear right into it. The 10 inch version is what we went with – and it’s perfect for my 75 lb dog. Available on Amazon.

5. West Paw Hurley Bone – Indestructible Dog Chew Toy

West Paw Hurley bone indestructible chew toyIf your dog is in need of a tough chew toy I recommend the West Paw Hurley Bone. It’s not huge or heavy, but it’s pretty darn tough. Laika continues to try and tear this toy apart and has had no luck. It’s soft and has a little bit of flex to it — it’s the only ‘chew toy’ that has lasted more than a day. We’ve had ours for over 6 months and it still looks brand new.

It’s light enough that it can be a decent fetch toy for indoors, and like all of the West Paw Zogoflex toys it floats in water and is dishwasher safe. West Paw guarantees their tough toys so if you’re not satisfied they’ll provide a one time free replacement. Available from Amazon.

6. Kong Ball – Great Heavy Duty Ball

tough dog toysWe got ourselves a Kong ball a few years back and I was surprised by how heavy it is. It’s not great for playing fetch inside the home due to it’s weight but it is indestructible. This is one tough ball; Laika has had it for years and you can’t even see a single bite mark on it.

The Kong ball & West Paw ball are the only two medium/large sized balls we have that have lasted for more than a year. This ball is my favorite toys for playing fetch outside. Available here on Amazon.

 7. Benebone – Heavy Duty Chew Toy

benebone chew toyWe’ve been using Benebones for a couple of years now they’re great. They’re tough, they keep my dog busy, and they’re inexpensive compared to other chew toys. After a couple of hours of chewing there’s some slight damage on the ends, but it’s nothing compared to what she does to similar toys.

Benebones are manufactured in the USA, made with real bacon flavor, and their curved shape makes it easy for dogs to hold onto. These bones will get some wear and tear after repeated use, but they’re much more durable than other bones we’ve tried.

Want a Tough Dog Toy? Stick to Kong & West Paw Toys

If you want a dog toy that you can leave out without worry get yourself some Kongs, balls, and any of the West Paw Zogoflex toys. There are many toys out there that claim to be indestructible, but these are the few that have stood up to that claim. If I want a toy that will keep my dog busy I give her a Kong or ball.

As with any dog toy these are made much more exciting by interactive play. Get up and play a game of tug or fetch – one simple game can turn any boring old toy into something exciting for your dog. Running out of ideas on how to keep your dog entertained indoors? Check out our list of 33 easy ways to keep your dog busy & 26 simple ways to keep your dog from getting bored.

Why Do I Save All Those Destroyed Dog Toys?

I save all those toys as a reminder of how much I’ve spent over the years. It helps me focus on quality rather than quantity. Instead of buying dog toys impulsively I do a bit of research now. I want toys that last, not more scraps.

The scraps also make for a fun scavenger hunt for my dog. I’ve spent a lot of time teaching Laika the names of these toys, and we still use them for the go find it game. And for fun once in a while I’ll tie all of the scraps together to make ‘mega toy,’ and that’s always a big hit.

For us nothing is indestructible. I usually buy the black classic shaped (bell shaped) kong for chewing and play and to leave in the runs. They do wear over time and I have to replace them. They have chewed up the red kongs. I know a dog that got a bowel obstruction from chewing up a puppy kong so be very careful with that. I think my dogs are just chewers…lol.

Holy cow I didn’t think dogs would chew Kongs like that. It’s amazing how well ours is holding up. I think real working dogs are probably in a class all their own when it comes to toys lol.

My dog will chew up Kong toys like they are peanut butter. You can get a super tough one only available thru your vet. It is blue. It lasted 15 minutes.

Our golden retrievers chewed the Classic Kong’s top off within a few months. It cracked at the seam and just hung on barely so we threw it out. We fear giving him anything as he has been to the vet for swallowing things and he nevers learns his lesson. BUT, the Kong Bone has lasted for 4 years so far.

My Pomsky (almost 7 months) destroys everything. Out of 20-30 toys we saved from two previous Schipperkes, none are left. She got several more for Christmas but most of those are gone (she pulls ears or tails or legs off then pulls out stuffing). The nylabones and such are whittled down to nothing in a few seconds! When bored she starts on the trimwork! If I am not in same room with her, I have to put her in her crate. I don’t like doing that, but wouldn’t have a house left if left to her own devices!

Magic loves to destroy stuffed toys–just loves ’em. So now I get those on sale and supervise, so he doesn’t swallow. He just likes to disembowel squeakers, and amputate ears/tails on the toys. I did find a kewl idea (on sale), sort of a squirrel tree house with a dozen smaller squeaky squirrels stuffed inside a soft-stuffed “squirrel house.” Magic loves to take them out, one by one. Then I can re-stuff and give it back to him to “disembowel” but without the stuffing going all over. We’ve lost a couple of the small squirrels but now can stuff the thing with other small-ish toys, and refresh the game.

I’ve seen that one and it does look like a nice interactive toy for sure. I know it’s got really good ratings as well. We haven’t tried that one because I assume Laika would destroy the container part. I’ll definitely check that one out.

The West Paw toys are so great. I really admire the companies that make TRULY tough toys, because they aren’t ensuring that you’ll have to replace it in short order. We’ve also had great luck with the Planet Dog toys – we have one shaped like an artichoke!

They cannot pick it up if you get appropriate size. She has the orange size 10″ I think. Lyra plays soccer with it all over the yard.

I had a Jolly Ball with the handle on it – took less than one day to have that torn off and chewed up. For some reason the Chuck It! balls are lasting. The ones with the squeaker she pulls the squeaker out, but the rest of the ball is holding up very well.

She LOVES the West Paw Quizl. I do stuff it, and she brings it back and drops it on my foot for a refill. I have the West Paw ball ordered.

My friend has the tree trunk with the little squirrels. While she loves playing with it, she has quickly disemboweled a little squirrel.

The Chuck It! Max Glow is surprisingly amazing. We play with it in the dark – in the house, outside, adds another level of challenge.

Holy crap, 100 toys? Wow! I think you’re right that there may be no such thing as an indestructible dog toy. Some dog somewhere will be able to destroy it! We always have a Kong or a version of a Kong (some other brand). Ace can’t destroy those. He pretty much ruins all stuffed toys and all rope toys eventually. I’ve had my eye on that West Paw ball for a few years. Ace loves that type of toy so I may have to just break down and order one of those for him.

Also have good luck with the hard plastic nylabones but wouldn’t let a dog use those unattended. I’m eagerly awaiting a few more West Paw toys that I just ordered – the ball has been Laika’s favorite for years so I figure they’ll do well. And their reviews are all great, and having a replacement plan makes me less nervous about trying out a new toy. It’s funny when they grab the Puppy Kong’s – they’re just such erratic toys. The only thing I’ve heard about Goughnuts that makes me a little hesitant is that a few people said their dogs don’t like them because they’re too heavy. I think I’ll try some of their products next.

The puppy kongs and smaller kongs should really only be given to dogs who arent really aggresive chewers/ smaller. My pit bull has wrecked even the black kongs (medium sized) by bascially just chewing the tip of it until i broke right at the seam, and then dogs can accidentally swallow the pieces that fall off. The bigger the better, he hasnt quite popped off the tip of his xlarge one yet but he sure tries with all his mite!
The only toy he hasnt been able to completely destroy yet is is the Nylabone for Powerful chewers! but the one that actually looks like a real leg bone, not the small bristly ones

I sympathize – it’s hard enough to get toys to last around here to begin with, I couldn’t imagine if my dog was able to destroy Kongs.

What I like to do is dab a bit of peanut butter over the hole in the bottom first, then I’ll turn it upside down in a cup and freeze it for a bit. Sometimes it’s messier than others unfortunately.

The JW Cuz and Gummy Bears have proven to last. The Cuz for a year now, the Gummies for at least most of that time, and they don’t disintegrate, they just get some holes and stop squeaking.

YES!!!!!!! Goughnuts are one of my Pitty’s favorite toys. They are a little more expensive than conventional balls and Kongs but they are totally lifetime guaranteed. Just ship them back and they’ll ship a new one!! 🙂 We got the most durable one (black) and so far he hasn’t destroyed it. 🙂

Another great ball is a Chuck-It ball (the orange and blue one). They last a long time with Rocky, who is a hardcore chewer. He can’t be left alone with any toys but these ones we can leave with him to play with.

These 2 chew toys are definitely worth the money, in my opinion. 🙂

Do you have the Maxx 50 goughnuts? I’m wondering if they have any “give” to them as the dog chews.

No, we don’t have that one. I don’t think they even had that one when we got the one for Rocky. It seems like they added quite a few products since we got the one we did. I believe this is the one we got for him.

        http://shop.goughnuts.com/product.sc;jsessionid=374C5564ACFF26A08086D328C66D689F.m1plqscsfapp02?productId=44&categoryId=1

It’s got a bit of give to it, but not too much. You can tell it’s definitely made of rubber.

You’re very welcome!!!! 🙂 🙂 Well, at the time it WAS the strongest one they made but that was almost 3 years ago, it will be 3 years in the summer. So yeah, he hasn’t destroyed it yet. Definitely worth the price, plus the lifetime guarantee is well worth it!! 🙂

Everything else but that and the blue and orange Chuck-It balls are destroyed. Even the wound tight rope toys we can’t leave him unsupervised with since he’ll pick at the strings and get them loose and eat them. :S

I see the West Paw Ball and the Jolly Ball come in different sizes on Amazon. Which size do you recommend for these? We have a 55 lb Husky, a 60 lb Husky Shepard Lab mix and a 40 lb Husky American Eskimo mix. We are more concerned for our two larger dogs

For the West Paw ball we have the 3 inch size which is perfect for my dog of 75 pounds. And with the Jolly ball we got the 10 inch version rather than 14 inch but it’s large enough that I haven’t seen any issues at all. And thanks for your keen eye – I updated the list to be more specific about the sizing.

I finally found a toy that has been so far indestructible. I have several dogs, Lab, Heeler and a Pit. They are called Indestructibone. I bought 1 for each of them 6 months ago for $20.00 and they are all in awesome shape with only teeth marks on the ends. I found them at bulletproofpetproducts.com
You load the ends with a meat treat or peanut butter. They absolutely love them and even sleep with them!

I work at a pet supply store, so I hear a lot of feedback; though my own dog isn’t destructive. My experience has been pretty much along the brands everyone’s listed here.

The Ultra Chuck It ball – plus now there’s a squeaky version for the squeak fans. The JW Treat Pod. Orbees.

The Jolly Egg – designed to be very difficult to hold on to, they just pop out of their paws and they’re off chasing them again. Drives my dog absolutely bananas.

The Invincibles (Kyjen is now Outward Hound) are great for dogs that like to kill squeakers, though any soft toy is likely to be faaar easier to destroy than anything else. For soft toys the Tuffy brand can last for some dogs, though.

These toys were all tested with my 70lb German Shepherd/Pit mix and she’s a pretty tough chewer. I have seen some images of West Paw toys after a long time with some teeth marks in them, but my dog hasn’t even done that yet.

My staffy x can destroy pretty much anything we give her. The black kong was ripped in half in 3 weeks. The only ‘toy’ that’s lasted more than a month for her is a car tyre. Yes, an actual tyre.
I’m looking into the goughnut toy though, and the Tuffy soft toys. While I know any sort of soft toy isn’t going to last, she likes to sleep with one. Plastic bottles are another favourite for when we’re home and can watch her so she doesn’t swallow any bits or cut herself.
And the good ol’ cows hoof for a super smelly chew that lasts days

I bought Nylabones for my dogs, They each took one and went in three different directions. It was years before they slowly surfaced without a single tooth mark. I’d call them indestructible and also a waste of money.

I have found starmark toys are also super durable. They have the everlasting treats to put inside them and my extremely heavy chewers have a blast. You have to put the treat in upside down or they can pop it out quick. They also have a treat dispensing ball that my dogs have yet to be able to destroy. Kongs are the only toy that has lasted longer then these.

Great suggestion. I love our Bob-a-Lot toy, and Laika has yet to make a dent in hers either. And with that toy I love that you can adjust the size of the hole, that way I don’t have to worry about using treats that won’t just all fall out immediately.

My Pit Bull does not destroy squeaky balls but she destroys the ones that do not squeak no matter how well made. She runs around with the squeaky ball in her mouth squeaking it. Sometime she happily lays down squeaking it also. She tears the eyes off of regular child’s stuffed animals but she does not destroy the rest of them. But the black Kong that is supposed to be indestructible she got angry at it because she could not get all the food out of so she chewed the narrow end off of it. Now she no longer destroys it.

My dog LOVES destroying stuffed toys. But she is not really too interested in any hard toys like Nylabones etc. So I’ve finally just accepted that her enjoyment lies in the destruction of toys, and even if it just took her a few minutes to tear the toy apart, she enjoyed the toy anyway! 🙂

Rubber toys definitely have the better chance of lasting longer but my pit for some reason hates rubber toys and won’t give them the time of day. He prefers rope toys for tug of war and catch etc so I’ve tried almost every rope toy on the market. Favorite so far is the Rocket by Mav4Life. It’s lasted a very long time and has not torn apart even after the most intense of play seshes

I’ve tried all these toys, and at this point I’m just out of luck. 🙁 I have a mixed small breed dog (some sort of spaniel under 20 lbs) who is incredibly high energy. Whenever we give him toys, be it rubber, fabric, or any other material. He destroys them in a day. Even the Kong!

He doesn’t do it by puncturing, instead he focuses on one area of the toy and keeps gnawing on it until all the pieces have fallen off. Our Kong toy he didn’t even bother with the treats we put on the inside, he chewed down the sides until he reached the core. Our biggest problem is he will then eat the pieces, so we can’t give him any real form of enrichment while we aren’t home, which I know drives him crazy.

Our dog loves the nylabone/benebone type toys. She works through them slowly but loves to sit and gnaw away at them. She was never really interested in Kongs – I think she prefers the harder toys whereas the Kong is a bit too soft to chew on!

Kong toys are garbage for the tough chewer. Utter garbage. I have a 70lb Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier and it just absolutely destroys anything given to him. I bought the Kong bone and within 3 hours he had it destroyed, I had to return it. Searching for indestructible toys, I found *THE* indestructible toy. He has had it over a year and half and has barely marked it. The toy is the Goughnut (https://www.goughnuts.com/). It’s a black ring of rubber that my dog quite literally “goes nuts” for. He takes it everywhere, like it’s a soother for a baby. He chews on it night and day and has barely dented it. If I washed it, it would probably look brand new. Absolutely astounding toy. Seriously. And it has a safety marker built into it, so that if the dog punctures and reveals the inner red safety band, they will replace it free of charge. That’s right a LIFETIME warranty on it being indestructible.

Our dog really loves those chew type nylabone type toys. She really put effort to quickly learn to use them in different ways. She was never really interested in extra soft jelly type toys – I think she prefers the bit harder toys. Because it’s bit hard to chew on, extra soft jelly like toys.

This is the perfect list to keep my dog busy. Also, I would like to say that chewing is a very natural behavior in all dogs, no matter their size or breed. So, I always provide my dog with rubber dog’s chews, this is another way to fulfill your dog’s need to chew while offering a tasty treat.

Squeaky toys are generally less chewable and are mostly loved by dogs by their sound. Chewable dog toys generally have a special toy choice.
