10 Great Dog Movies Available on Netflix
Is it just me, or is choosing something to watch on Netflix a chore in and of itself? There’s so many things to choose from, and before you know it a half hour has passed and you still haven’t settled on what to watch.
When that happens to me I revert back to my default setting: find something with dogs. Dogs make everything better, and for me that includes movies. And luckily Netflix has plenty of good ones to choose from. Here’s 10 great dog movies available on Netflix.
1. Homeward Bound
Update: Homeward Bound was recently removed from Netflix, though it is available to stream on Amazon.
Homeward Bound is a funny, heart warming movie that follows the story of three pets (two dogs and a cat) as they travel through the wilderness to find their owners. And when I say heart warming I mean it; this one has all the feels. This was my absolute favorite movie as a kid, and this is the only VHS tape I watched enough to actually wear out.
Fun fact: Homeward Bound is a remake of the 1963 Disney film The Incredible Journey which was based on the 1961 children’s book by Sheila Burnford.
2. Benji (2018) / Watch on Netflix
Benji is a family movie that follows the story of two siblings who befriend a stray dog named Benji. Benji (2018) is a reboot of the 1974 film of the same name. Fun fact: The 2018 remake is directed by Brandon Camp, son of Joe Camp who directed the original.
3. Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore / Watch on Netflix
Cats & dogs must set aside their differences and merge animal instincts when Kitty Galore decides to claw her way to world domination.
4. Benji (1974) / Watch on Netflix
Another one of my favorite movies growing up, the original Benji tells the story of a heroic stray dog named Benji who helps save two kidnapped children. If you’re looking for a great movie where the dog saves the day you can’t go wrong with Benji.
5. For The Love of Benji / Watch on Netflix
If you’re a fan of Benji (and find him irresistibly charming and lovable) check out For the Love of Benji. In this family film Benji is pursued by spies in Athens.
6. The Stray / Watch on Netflix
The Stray tells the inspiring true story of a stray dog named Pluto who appears from out of nowhere just in time to save a family that is falling apart.
7. Hotel For Dogs / Watch on Netflix
Hotel For Dogs is about two kids and the stray dog they secretly take in at a vacant hotel. This movie is a kids-outsmart-the-adults style fairy tale, and it’s a great option if you’re looking for a simple yet sweet film.
8. Balto / Watch on Netflix
Balto is about a sled dog (half wolf) who risks his life to prevent a deadly epidemic from ravaging his home. It’s based on the true story of the famed mission of mercy for Alaskan children, also known as the 1925 serum run to Nome.
9. Super Buddies / Watch on Netflix
Super Buddies is about 5 pups with unique superpowers who try to save the day when a bully from outer space threatens the planet.
10. Beverly Hills Chihuahua / Watch on Netflix
While on vacation in Mexico, a ritzy Beverly Hills chihuahua named Chloe, finds herself lost and in need of assistance in order to get back home.

I have never been able to bring myself to pay for television. Although seeing what Neflix has to offer has been sorely tempting.
Luckily I own copies of my two favorite dog movies, Babe (although it’s supposedly about a pig, dogs figure heavily) and Best in Show. But when Isle of Dogs eventually makes it to Netflix, that might tip me over the edge. 🙂

You have such great taste in movies; I don’t own many movies, but I do have those two. I’m looking forward to Isle of Dogs as well.

Hi Jen,
Look, you shared some really interesting movies on this list. Some I’ve already had a chance to watch, like The Secret Life of Pets. It’s pretty cool and I saw it with the kids (I’m a pedagogue).
Others I have not watched and I will schedule to watch this next weekend! Your job was really cool, thanks for sharing those movies.
Success in the blog!
Kisses

I love this list! Balto is such a classic. I watched it all the time growing up. Thanks for sharing! I’ve been interested in watching The Secret Life of Pets, and for some reason I keep scrolling past it. But I’ll have to watch it after reading this post 🙂

Great list! Just proving that Netflix needs more dog movies. I recently showed my boys Homeward Bound and they loved it. It was one of my favorite movies growing up as a kid.

I remember watching Homeward Bound a lot as a kid; we had it on VHS. I also remember reading the book for class in sixth grade – I think that was the first time I ever read the book that a movie was based on, and I was surprised how different the book was compared to the movie.

Hello, Jen 🙂
First of all, I loved your compilation of these dog movies.
Recently I watched Hachiko and it moved me in tears. The kind of love dogs have for us is so underrated and I believe these furbabies should be appreciated for their loyalty and companionship! Let’s share these movies more and more.

I haven’t watched many dog movies (mad at myself bcz why haven’t I?) anyway, I loveeee Marley and Me, it is a wonderful movie about a Golden retriever. It will make you laugh and cry at the same time and you will want to adopt a retriever right away.
O Meu Animal says
Is Hachi or Marley not on Netflix yet?

My favorite dog movie has to be ‘Marley and me,’ and I believe it’s the best dog movie ever. I avoid watching pets’ movies because they always make me emotional. I have never been able to complete watching ‘Hachi: a dog’s tale,’ It’s a really sad movie. And yes, I remember watching ‘Balto’ as a kid. This movie made me love dogs even more. After reading this post, I’m looking forward to watching ‘Homeward bound’ and also ‘Hotel for Dogs’ sounds interesting.
