Roundup 72: Favorite Dog Articles & Videos of the Week

After seeing that image above you might be thinking “What the frak is going on in Michigan? Is it snowing already???” Well although we’re known for crazy weather the answer is no – the weather is certainly not snowy yet.

The images I’ve been using for roundups lately are some of my “extras.” Photos that for whatever reason didn’t make the cut for a post of their own. I’ve got thousands of photos like this, so I thought this was a simple way to get some use out of them.

You know you’re a dog owner when your dog folder is over 40 gig… Thank goodness for digital cameras, I don’t even want to imagine how many rolls of film that would have been.

But enough about photos, let’s get down to why you’re really here – to read this week’s awesome dog stories.

From how scientists taught dogs to lie still in an MRI machine to a handy checklist of things to look for when buying pet drugs online, here’s some of my favorite dog articles of the week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

When Dogs Are the Best Medicine
Moving essay about how dogs not only enrich our lives, but how they teach us valuable life lessons about what’s important in life and the simple things we often forget to focus on.

Unsurprisingly, we found what dogs always find – opportunity and possibility. The opportunity for adventure and the possibility of great discovery along the way. The familiar sentiment is true – we travel to find ourselves. And when traveling it’s certainly helpful to have a guide, or in our case, a couple of guide dogs.

Here’s How Scientists Got Dogs to Lie Still in a Brain Scanner For Eight Minutes
Earlier this week we found out that dogs process human speech in a much similar to the way we do thanks to this new study. But did you find yourself wondering how scientists were able to test the dogs? This article describes how scientists were able to get the dogs to sit still in an MRI machine for eight minutes using nothing but positive reinforcement.

The Biggest Lie Vets Tell Themselves
Though provoking post about why pet owners don’t always follow veterinary advice, and some innovative ideas on how to improve communication between vets & owners.

A Dog Has Given Birth to the First Identical Twin Puppies
Did you know that outside of humans and one species of armadillo identical twins are pretty much non-existent? This article explains the science behind the rarity, and details the first case of identical twin puppies in scientific literature.

Be Cautious Buying Drugs For Your Pet Online
Buying drugs online may be convenient, but the quality of online pharmacies varies. Here’s some FDA guidelines on what to look for before buying drugs for your pet online.

The quality assurance issue is critical because the FDA has identified veterinary products that are counterfeit, expired, improperly stored or contain drugs other than those on the label.
