Roundup 69: Favorite Dog Articles & Videos of the Week

Last updated on August 13, 2016 By Puppy Leaks Leave a Comment

From the importance of acknowledging that we all grieve differently to the science behind how dogs read our emotions, here’s some of my favorite dog articles of the week. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

My GPS is Off
Beautifully honest post about how complicated the grieving process can be. It’s important to remember that we all grieve differently, and that it’s always changing. “I know that everything will work out. I know that this home will not be empty forever and I know that the grieving process for Jake, while complicated is somehow just as it’s supposed to be.”

I Don’t Call Myself a Parent
Insightful look into the love we feel for our pets, and regardless of what we call that bond it’s still love and something we each articulate with our own own words. “I can love my dogs as dogs, and that love means something, and doesn’t have anything at all to do with children. My love for my dogs shouldn’t make a parent feel threatened in their love for their child, regardless of if I refer to my dogs as my kids, fur babies, or just as beloved pets.”

Dangerous Dog Acts Has Failed to Keep People Safe
25 years ago the Dangerous Dog Act was enacted to help protect the public, yet it’s failed to achieve that goal. Unfortunately these laws target dogs based on their breed & appearance rather than behavior and it’s resulted in thousands of dogs being euthanized based on their looks alone.

Cesar Millan’s Animal Cruelty Investigation is a Wake Up Call for Dog Trainers
Perhaps the best thing to come out of this case is more public awareness about the benefits of using positive training methods. Research has shown that using forceful methods in training harms the human-dog bond and can make behaviors worse.

A Warning for Dogs, and Their Best Friends, in Study of Fertility
New study has found that male dogs have seen a decrease in sperm quality over the past 25 years, and scientists believe that decline is related to environmental causes. “Over 26 years, motility, the progressive forward movement of sperm, dropped 30 percent in all five breeds.”

Flight Attendant Adopts Dog Who Never Stopped Waiting for Her Outside Hotel
Heartwarming rescue story that shows how strong the human-dog bond can be. “For the dog, it had been love at first sight. He proceeded to settle in at the entrance of Sievers’s hotel.”

For Veterinarians, Caring for Sick Pets & Grieving Owners Takes a Toll
Important look at the toll compassion fatigue can have on those working in the animal field. “Little data exists, but research suggests veterinarian suicide rates are some of the highest in the medical field, and a 2014 study of about 10,000 veterinarians found twice as much “severe psychological distress” in them than in the general public.”

You & Your Dog Share a Language: The Feelings Written on Your Faces
A look at recent research that highlights how well dogs can pick up on our feelings. “Dogs really do seem to be especially skilled at picking up on what people are feeling; one study published earlier this year even suggests that dogs can recognize a person’s emotions by looking at his or her facial expressions.”
