Weekly Roundup 22 – Dog Stories, Deals, and Videos

Last updated on July 11, 2015 By Puppy Leaks 7 Comments

This dog is tiring me out. I don’t know if it’s the longer daylight hours or something in the water but she’s come down with a serious case of GO-GO-GO syndrome. She used to take naps right after a walk or romp in the yard, but now she’s frantically shoving her toys in my face as soon as we come back inside.

So I’ve been improvising again, trying to find ways to keep her busy. I’m happy to say it’s going well so far, compared to my human friends dogs are really easy to entertain. Making our own air hockey game by sliding a piece of ice across the floor = funnest thing ever.

Dog Articles, Deals, and Videos

Laika has been extremely active & demanding lately. Does the summer make your dog insane?

If you have a chance to relax and catch up with some reading this weekend check out some of these. Here’s my picks for this weeks awesome dog stories, deals, and videos. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Awesome Dog Stories of the Week

My Wife Left Me With Nothing But a Dog, So I Started This Fun Photo Series
On his 30th his wife left him – she took everything and he was left in an empty apartment with his bull terrier named Jimmy Choo. As you can see from the featured photos he felt inspired; armed with a marker and some white walls he created this awesome photo series.

First, Deal With Emotions – A Tale of a Training Mistake
What an amazing first impression, I’d never been to this blog before (it’s pretty new) and I was instantly impressed. Wonderful storytelling, great insight, and definitely leaves you with a lot to ponder. This post is part of this months Positive Reinforcement Pet Training Week Blog Hop:  it’s one of my favorite hops, always filled with great stories and training tales, so be sure to check out the rest of the posts as well.

3 Tips to Calm Your Dog After a Workout
Lately Laika has been driving me nuts – it’s almost as if the more we do together the more she pushes it. She’s gotten into the go-go-go mentality and it can become quite challenging to keep her busy. This article came to me at the perfect time, and I’ve been practicing 2 of the suggestions this week with great success so far.

Animal Rescue Workers More Prone to Depression, Suicide
A recent study has found that animal animal rescue workers, firefighters, and police officers have the highest suicide rate of all American workers. Many suffer from compassion fatigue which is defined as: Emotional exhaustion, caused by the stress of caring for traumatized or suffering people or animals.

Embracing Sadness: Our Irreplaceable Pets
Must read for anyone that’s lost a beloved pet and finds themselves dealing with feelings of gloom or sadness from time to time. Fresh or not those feelings of loss can come out of nowhere, sometimes years after the fact.

Laughing and crying at the same time, I know now too: Sometimes the pain of loss is going to blindside you. Getting another dog, no matter how great, won’t stop that from happening, though time might.

You have no idea how perfect your post was for me over the past week; Laika’s been way more rambunctious than usual. I love those tips 🙂

Thanks so much for the mention and the kind words! I am all a-flutter!

Nala’s been full of beans the past couple of weeks, too! She naps most of the day, wakes up Ready to Go around 5:00, and goes to bed with the sun, which, sadly, doesn’t go to bed until nearly 9:00.

I think its funny that Nala’s full of beans lately (easy to say when it’s not my dog), I really do wonder if it’s something in the air.

I also liked Emma’s post on calming a dog after a workout. Since I’ve worked as a dog walker, I often see how excited the dogs get after returning home from a walk/run. They’re supposed to look tired, and instead they’re often even more excited, like they can’t wait to go tell their owners about it! Having a routine to calm a dog after working out is so important (for some dogs, Ace just collapses in the doorway on his own!). With foster dogs, I often have them lie down with a Kong-type toy afterwards.

It’s the weirdest thing I swear, Laika usually naps after our walks but something about the summer time makes her skip the naps completely and just want to go go go. I’m getting into the post workout routine and it’s going very well.
