Who Doesn’t Love Silly Dog Poems?

Last updated on May 12, 2016 By Puppy Leaks 9 Comments

Did you know April is National Poetry Month? I thought it would be fun to celebrate by sharing some of my embarrassing poetry. Do you write silly poetry to your pets? I know I’m not alone on this. (and yes I’m looking forward to Oz the Terrier’s bad poetry contest this year 🙂 )

My (Bad) Poems to Laika

Who loves silly dog poems? I am by no means a poet – but that isn’t stopping me from writing poems to my dog anyway. Here are some of my poems inspired by Laika, mostly fueled by her insane adolescent phase that is gladly over:

What Is It?

Bark bark bark
Let me get up to see
It appears my dog is summoning me

Bark Bark Bark
That old familiar sound
As I peer out the window
With my loud mouthed hound
Bark Bark Bark
Looking in the distance I finally see
Why she’s been barking at me
Bark Bark Bark

There’s a leaf in the yard
And it’s blowing away
This is how we’ll spend
Most of our day

Why?

You cower and hide
As I fill up the tub
Yet when I go outside
And turn on the hose
You follow me gladly
For a spray up the nose

Zoomies

After 6 hour hikes
And swims in the lake
I thought you’d be good
To rest for the night
But instead here we are
In the middle of the night
You’re just racing around
With no end in sight
Laika my dear
Will you ever calm down?

(Actual) Great Poems About Dogs

One of my favorite blogs is Life With Dogs & Cats; I could read Susan’s funny haikus all day long. If you’re looking for some funny pet humor you won’t be disappointed.

And if by chance you’re looking for something sentimental there’s the classic “A Dog Named Beau” by Jimmy Stewart. He read it on the Johnny Carson show years ago, and it even made Carson tear up. (I’m not going to embed it because I’ve been told many times it just makes people cry – so probably not a great idea to watch at work)

Some of My Favorite Dog Poems

Thorns may hurt you, men desert you, sunlight turn to fog;
but you’re never friendless ever, if you have a dog.
–Douglas Malloch

Lots of people have a rug.
Very few have a Pug.
-E.B White

My sunshine doesn’t come from the skies,
It comes from the love in my dog’s eyes.
-Author Unknown

The plants are torn
The garbage strewn
The wires chewed
The couch and I had a fight …
I went places I should never go
I saw a side of myself I should never see
I said things to the cat I can never take back
So please don’t ever leave again
-Francesco Marcuiliano

If you love that last poem check out Francesco Marcuiliano’s books I Could Chew on This : And Other Poems by Dogs and I Could Pee on This : And Other Poems by Cats. They’re the funniest books I’ve read in ages. (and both were New York Times Bestsellers)

To learn more about Marcuilaino and how he got started with his humorous pet poetry listen to this great interview on NPR.

Ah, I love this! I think your poems are wonderful and so sweet. I mostly change the lyrics to songs and sing them to Haley, haha! Her favorite is “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Free Falling” by Tom Petty (I think because it starts with the line “She’s a good girl, loves her mama”). Ok, you’ve inspired me though, I think I’ll try a poem or two for Haley. 🙂

You know singing is definitely a special sort of ode to our canine companions 🙂

Your poems are great and I think could apply to many dogs. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing them on the hop!

I loved your poems. Strange as this may sound, I’ve never written a poem to the dogs. I’ve made (and sang) lots of songs to them, but never a poem. Maybe I need to give it a try. 🙂
Thanks for joining the blog hop~

You should check out Mary Oliver’s collection of poetry about her dogs called Dog Songs! Ted Kooser’s Valentines collection doesn’t specifically have poems about dogs, but his dog appears in the illustrations accompanying many of the poems.

I’m going to check out that collection – I have had a hard time finding great poetry about dogs it seems like it’s so few and far between. Thanks for the tip.
