500 Old Fashioned Dog Names

Looking for a classic name for your new puppy? You’ve come to the right place.

Picking out the perfect name for your new dog can be a real challenge. Most of us look for a dog name that sounds good, one that fits their personality, and one that the whole family can agree one. Finding a name that meets all of those criteria? Well that can be a challenge.

My favorite trick? I check out baby name lists for ideas. I’ve used one every time I’ve had to name a new pet, and they always give me inspiration. And one of my favorite themes is using old fashioned (and historical) names. My dog Laika, for example, is named after the first mammal to orbit Earth.

If you’re a fan of classic dog names like I am, or just looking for some old fashioned dog names this list is for you. From Abe to Zora, this list has a wide variety of old fashioned and classic dog names to choose from. And really, who among us doesn’t love a good old man name for a dog? Here’s 500 old fashioned dog names.

Tip: If you’re looking for even more dog names be sure to check out our list of 500 popular dog names, 500 cute puppy names & 500 geography inspired dog names.

Have you ever tried coming up with 500 names that fit a specific theme? It’s not quite as easy as it sounds. Although I came up with a lot of classic dog names for this list I couldn’t quite reach 500, so I turned to other name lists for help.  That credit belongs to the following sites and their great classic name lists:

  • Fit Pregnancy
  • Baby Center
  • Bark Post
  • Nameille
  • Pop Sugar
  • Nameberry

What Are Your Favorite Old Fashioned Dog Names?

Do you have any favorite old fashioned dog names? I’m currently obsessed with my neighbor’s Golden Retriever named Floyd; that name is perfect for him. How did you name your last dog? Are you a fan of using human names for your pets? Have you ever named your dog after a historical figure? My previous dog was named Carter, so that’s a given for me. Let me know in the comments below.

All three of my current dogs are on that list! When we adopted Theo, he already responded well to his name, so we just kept it. I generally give my dogs names that are typically considered human names, but I love meeting dogs with unusual names.

    Love old fashioned dog names!
We named our big fluffy Great Pyre/Cattle Dog mix “Winston.”
They were calling him “Prince” at the rescue at the time, but we’ll never know what his original name was.
Our other favorite was “Walter.” ?

We rehome a 5 yr old retriever/hound mix. He is red ( like a setter with golden tones. At the shelter and former home, they called him RED….But we arent crazy for the name. Looking over the lists, I like Finley, Grady or Brogan…but still deciding !!! We dont use “human” common names for our furry loved ones. In the pat we have had Baxter, Mandy, Dudley, Tucker, Buddy Boy, Qita and Riley.
